A man of Guyanese parentage was arrested and charged with five counts of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed five persons who were celebrating Hanukkah on Saturday in New York City.

The suspect identified as Grafton Thomas, 37, was arrested on Sunday by two lawmen at West 144th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard.

During a press conference yesterday morning, Thomas’ lawyer Michael Sussman stated that the suspect’s  mother Kim Thomas, a registered nurse moved to the US in the 1980’s.          Continue reading →

West Indies cricket legend Clive Lloyd has been given a knighthood in the New Year Honours List.

The Guyana-born batsman, now 75, has been honoured for his service to the game.

Clive Lloyd heads a long list of names from West Indies cricket to receive the award, with the likes of Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Everton Weekes and Sir Viv Richards all honoured.

Although Lloyd received a CBE in 1993, the belated nature of Lloyd’s award might be explained by his hailing from Guyana, which became a republic in 1970.

Coincidentally, Guyana was granted independence in 1966, the year in which 22-year old, left-handed, middle-order batsman, Clive Lloyd made his Test debut against India.            Continue reading →

GUYANA: Oil flows for Xmas as Exxon finds yet another well

The company had always led Guyanese to believe that first oil would have flowed from the seabed sometime in March of 2020, but just before half past nine on Dec. 20, American supermajor ExxonMobil announced that Guyana had officially become the world’s newest producer of crude oil, less than five years after Exxon had first boasted about an offshore commercial find.

Senior company officials had said that it was standard practice to add a six-month additional period to the real deadline to cater for eventualities and extensive safety checks before a startup date was announced, hence March as the outer deadline that had had been fed to industry observers for months.            Continue reading →

Charrandass Persaud,  the former government parliamentarian who voted for an opposition-sponsored no-confidence motion to remove the David Granger-led administration, has one year later openly endorsed People’s Progressive Party (PPP) presidential candidate, Irfaan Ali.

“I am telling you now that I will support Irfaan in his bid for President of the Republic of Guyana in this 2020 March 2nd general election and I know that I will make a valuable contribution to his team, to his party and to himself. President David Granger Saturday morning December 28, 2019 commissioned a US$3.4 million power station at Dogg Point, Agatash in Bartica, Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region 7), where he noted that it will bring unprecedented relief to residents who have experienced severe power outages over the years.

Central High School which was located on Smyth Street, Georgetown, as of September 2019, was merged with St. Mary’s High School and is now the “The New Central High School.” The new address is 5-6 Princess Street. Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.

This announcement was disclosed at Central High School’s final graduation in November. However no word was given as to the reason for merging one school with the other.    Continue reading →

Guyana: Govt. transactions sluggish; generate cost for both citizens and firms – IDB

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has reported that Guyana is the lowest ranked country in Latin America when it comes to the speedy services when transacting businesses with Government institutions.

Doing such requires a lot of effort; from waiting at counters, filling forms reading communications, seeking information, sending letters or even learning to use a new system or website. In brief are all time consuming.
According to the 2019 data supplied by Transparency International citizens spend an average of five hours, and sometimes three or more visits to get one transaction completed.            Continue reading →
