Delighted You Failed Your English Exam, Son – By Martin Hemming | The Sunday Times

I’ll Always Have a Job as Long as You Can’t Spell

Martin Hemming | The Sunday Times

The kidz can’t be bothered to write proper no more. So says a report last week that suggested increasing numbers of children are failing their GCSE English exams because they are writing in “slanglish”. If your immediate response is “OMG ikr” — “Oh, my God! I know, right?” — then it is, I’m afraid, too late for you.

As with most things that are terrible with the world — Bip Ling, the collapse of global democracy — technology is being blamed. Textspeak and autocorrect are the culprits.

This, of course, makes perfect sense, and we all secretly knew this would happen the first time Microsoft Word drew a wiggly red line under our deliberate misspelling of “separate”. Is it receive or recieve? Your smartphone knows, so why does your brain need to? Stationary or stationery? Oh, what difference can one little vowel possibly make? (Though, free tip: I always remember it as “E for envelope”. My pleasure.)             Continue reading

Widespread Crop Failures The U.S. – Blogfactory reports

June 24, 2019 – Blogfactory

Torrential rains have been hammering the heartland of America for months, and at this point vast stretches of farmland in the middle of the country are nothing but mud.  As a result of the endless rain and unprecedented flooding that we have witnessed, millions of acres of farmland will have nothing planted on them at all in 2019, and that is a major national crisis.

But most farmers were able to get seeds planted in the deplorable conditions, and now they are desperately hoping that something will actually grow.  Unfortunately, on farm after farm what is coming out of the ground looks absolutely terrible.  Even if we get ideal weather conditions for the rest of the summer, there is no way that many of these fields will be ready before the first hard frost arrives.  As you will see below, the truth is that we are potentially facing the most widespread crop failures in all of U.S. history.

Commentary: A Caribbean Ghana Air-Agreement can now take off

By Ray Chickrie

For decades Caribbean leaders have talked about an air-link between the Caribbean and Accra, Ghana, but now the idea is picking up pace after the visit of Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo to the Caribbean in June 2019. The issue was discussed between president Akufo-Addo and his Caribbean counterparts in Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad.

Prime minister Rowley and president Nana Akufo-Addo during bilateral talks expressed optimism of reaching a possible “Air Services Agreement” that would include Caribbean Airlines (CAL) and Ethiopian Airlines (ET) because it was chosen by the Ghanaian government to resurrect a national airline.          Continue reading
