Business: Banking: Much gratitude to the Caribbean for Boxhand, Susu and Partner:

— We now have humane systems of economic cooperation

October 25, 2021 – By Caroline Shenaz Hossein

Box-hand. Susu. Esusu. Meeting Turn. Sol. Lodge. Partner. These are some of the vernacular names for systems of banking co-operatives that Caribbean people have been doing for more than a century—these systems are known by academics as rotating savings and credit associations, or ROSCAs for short.

ROSCAs aren’t new to many of us with Caribbean born parents living in the diaspora. My great-grandmother, Maude Gittens, was a street caterer who lived  in Sangre Grande, Trinidad. But she was also a well-known Susu “Banker Lady.” Susu is a local name for a ROSCA. It’s the same name used in Ghana, West Africa — which in fact, is an original source for these co-ops. And Susu can be found among the diaspora outside of Africa and the Caribbean, so in your towns and cities.            Continue reading

Report of US naval build up off the coast of Venezuela – not confirmed

Rumours fly of US naval build up off the coast of Venezuela

By Youri Kemp – Caribbean News Now –

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada — According to a YouTube video, an American fleet is advancing towards Venezuela and at this moment is parked off the coast of the island of Grenada. However, locals who frequently travel through the area, from fisher-folk, persons that use small aircraft, to officials with regional carrier LIAT have not seen or confirmed anything that the video in question suggests might be taking place.

The 12-minute video, posted over three days ago, is going viral as it shows the marine vessel tracker “Marine Traffic” using its filter features to claim that the ships highlighted in grey must be naval warships because they are unspecified and have no distinguishing features that show up on radar.      Continue reading

The View from Europe: Oil, the environment and the Caribbean – By David Jessop

Earlier this month Exxon announced that that it had made a major new oil find off Guyana. It was, it said, the largest since it began exploration there in 2015. The company’s statement followed one last June advising of a ‘world-class discovery’ on another well, and before that, announcements about four other commercially exploitable finds.

What this and Exxon’s recent request to the Guyanese government for permission to drill up to 40 new wells after 2022 suggests, is that the country is about to become a major oil producer in the Western Hemisphere.      Continue reading

NEW YORK, USA — Gaston Browne, prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, told the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday September 24, 2016 that, along with climate change and lingering indebtedness, Caribbean islands face another existential threat from the withdrawal by global banks of correspondent banking relations to their financial institutions.

In the global campaign against money-laundering and terrorist financing, very strict penalties have been imposed on banks by regulatory bodies in North America and Europe for any infringement of the stringent regulations.

BELIZE CITY, Belize, Friday, May 31, 2016 – Caribbean economies are poised to benefit from a region-wide initiative to expand seafood market share, through the implementation of food safety measures to enable countries to get a bigger piece of the global pie, worth an estimated US$130 billion annually.

Caribbean countries, including the Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, are now capitalizing on a coordinated approach to broaden the gateway to the growing market. CARIFORUM (CARICOM and the Dominican Republic) now exports about US$400 million worth of fish and seafood annually, according to the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM).
