When I was a young child, I did not necessarily consider myself Black. Looking back, I recognize how odd of a thing it was because my immediate family members were all clearly African descendants. In my young mind though, I could not make sense of my differences when compared to the majority of the family I grew up with. I was lighter and had different features; so clearly, I had to be “different” from them, right?

With race not being something that was really discussed, I relied on knowledge I gained from studying history and popular culture to get an idea of who I was. I tried to find my face in books and screens but could not find myself represented in the images that stared back at me. I then began to take cues about my identity from the way people responded to me. Continue reading →

Beautiful Buxton – by Francis Quamina Farrier

A few months ago, I wrote an article which has the headline, “From Buxton to Buxton” which juxtaposed the town of Buxton in England and the village of Buxton here in Guyana. Since writing that article, I have done a two-hour walkabout in the Guyana Buxton. During that exercise in which my 83- year-old feet did admirably well, I saw and experienced much of modern-day Buxton in Region 4. I have to say, I was impressed; especially with the people with whom I had verbal communication. Continue reading →

Georgetown was British in its lack of pretension, its laid back style and the laid back lifestyle.

So the Brown Betty was different and exotic with its long silver bar, running down the whole length of its North side and the red leather seats, perched on shiny poles, in front of the bar and red leather booths running down the South side and with a stair case running up to a landing against the back (West) wall with a shiny silver and red Wurlitzer Juke box dominating the landing and stairs from the lan.ding to the next floor. After spending three weeks working remotely from Barbados, I’d love to try the digital nomad lifestyle in other countries when it’s safe to do so.
It felt like such a privilege to be there that I was motivated to work extra hard, and many digital nomads told me they felt the same.
Being so close to the ocean did wonders for my mental wellbeing, and it also inspired my work.
Travel is currently discouraged to limit the spread of the coronavirus, but when it’s safe again, I’d love to explore more of the world while working remotely.

They were not quite “bonfires of the vanities,” to borrow from the title of Tom Wolfe’s 1987 satirical novel. They were more like bonfires of the stupid – not the ignorant, just stupid.

Worldwide, four million people have died from the COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus and 196 million are infected. In the United States, 627,350 have died and 35.3 million are infected. In Florida, 38,700 have died and 2.5 million are infected – the third highest after California and Texas. In Miami-Dade County, 6,372 have died and 525,000 are infected. In Broward, 3,079 have died and 259,000 are infected. In Palm Beach, 2883 have died and 157,000 are infected. Continue reading →

GUYANA: OIL: Multi-billion-dollar ‘Port of Vreed-en-hoop’ facility in the works

Guyanese company NRG Holdings Inc. plans to establish a multi-billion-dollar multi-purpose port facility dubbed the ‘Port of Vreed-en-hoop’ that will feature a major shore base at Foreshore, Plantation Best on the West Bank of Demerara.

The intended development will fill the gap for oil and gas support services to meet the rapidly expanding offshore operations while providing a range of services geared towards economic development onshore. These will be carried out with the local economy benefitting from employment, duties and taxes, ancillary goods and services and capacity-building.

GUYANA: OIL: Exxon makes another major oil discovery offshore

ExxonMobil finds more oil at Whiptail

[Stabroek News -28 July 2021] – ExxonMobil today said it has made an oil discovery at Whiptail in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana, its 21st major find here and adding to its nine billion barrels of recoverable resources.

In a statement, Exxon said that the Whiptail-1 well encountered 246 feet (75 meters) of net pay in high quality oil bearing sandstone reservoirs. Drilling, it said, is also ongoing at the Whiptail-2 well, which has encountered 167 feet (51 meters) of net pay in high quality oil bearing sandstone reservoirs. Drilling continues at both wells to test deeper targets, and results will be assessed for future development, Exxon said.
