TRAVEL: Grenada named world’s first ‘Culinary Capital’

The London-based World Food Travel Association (WFTA) on Tuesday named Grenada and its sister islands Carriacou and Petite Martinique the world’s first “Culinary Capital.”+

WFTA said “Culinary Capitals” is a regenerative tourism program that it devised “to put the spotlight on culinary cultures around the world, as the tourism industry begins to recover after its long hiatus.”        Continue reading →

Canada Appoints First Indigenous Governor General – A ‘Step Forward’ to Reconciliation

OTTAWA — Mary Simon, an Inuk leader and former diplomat, described her appointment as Canada’s next governor general — the first Indigenous person to serve in the role — as a “step forward on the long path to reconciliation.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced Simon as the next person to serve in the viceregal role during a news conference Tuesday at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., in which the theme of healing long-standing divides figured prominently.

“It is only by building bridges, bringing between people in the North and South, just like in the East and West, that we can truly move forward,” Trudeau said during his opening remarks.        Continue reading →

GUYANA: History: The Chinese in Guyana

This brief feature on the Chinese which has been edited, was first published by the Stabroek News on January 9, 1988.

The presence of new Chinese immigrants among us is often remarked upon. They are, however, merely the latest wave in a continuing story of immigration to this country. January 12, 2013, marked the 160th anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese in Guyana.

Immigrants
The first 647 Chinese were brought into the colony of British Guiana in three ships during 1853. The first boat to dock on January 12, 1853 was the Glentanner, carrying 262 passengers from Amoy. These were distributed amongst the plantations of Windsor Forest (West Coast Demerara), Pouderoyen (West Bank Demerara) and La Jalousie (West Coast Demerara),  while one lone soul was sent to Union in Essequibo.        Continue reading →
