As Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton, continues to pursue the reform of his sector; he emphasized recently that a main concern remains with those companies that are still to deliver millions of dollars’ worth of drugs to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Dr. Norton said that several companies have been in default for many years. He said that this is not only “negligence and deceit, but a clear sign of blatant disrespect for the procurement laws of the country.” Continue reading →

I hate flying. The hassle of Customs and airport security coupled with delays and the poor quality of food on planes has been a major deterring factor.
But in the last few years, the demands of the media business have forced me to learn to cope.
I should have done it more.
Seeing what other countries do has really opened my eyes. But it makes me impatient about the sloth of things happening in Guyana. There will be critics and historians who will attempt to defend the Guyana situation, arguing about the effects of slavery and colonialism. They will say that Guyana is a young country…so be patient. Guyana: Celebrating Indigenous Heritage Month – September
During the month of September, Amerindians across the country celebrate Indigenous Heritage Month.
This annual event is one where Guyana’s first people are celebrated and recognized for their contributions to our rich cultural heritage. Many events are undertaken at villages across the country and this is preceded by a launch event in the city.
Today we feature photographs of the 2015 launch which took place on Tuesday, September 1st at the Amerindian Heritage Village, Sophia Exhibition complex. All Photos By Alva Solomon.
His Excellency President David Granger making an address to the audience at the launching of the month-long celebrations.The Wai Wai tribe was preparing to head to the stage when we caught up with them. The group was interacting in their own dialect as persons stared at their unique mode of dress.This sweet little Wai Wai Princess was eager to have her picture taken so we fulfilled her promise with a wonderful shot of her in her Indigenous apparel.Father and Son. This lad hails from the Region Nine community of Masekenari, a remote village in the South Rupununi. His father was by his side as he prepared to perform at the launching of the celebrations.Hand crafted baskets and traysCarved canoes!- These miniature canoes are attractive and can be utilised as a heartwarming gift to someone special.Many beautiful hand -crafted ornaments are on sale at the Heritage Village .Orealla village resident Andy Peneaux and group perform a song. The artiste is more popular in neighbouring Suriname , where he performs at cultural events.The Surama Cultural Group performing a dance and song.
Wild meat and chicken were on sale at the launching . The meats were sold at a reasonable price to the curious customer.
The Tuma Pot. Here, the Haimarra fish is being sold from the pot. The meal is one of the more nationally known dish of the Amerindians.

This entry is in memory of ROBIN HUNTE, a member of the internationally acclaimed Merrymen who stood out for his unique stylings on the tenor guitar and banjo, who passed away on 24 August 2015.

It was President George H. W. Bush’s February 1990 Republic Day message to President Desmond Hoyte, expressing the hope that the upcoming elections will be free and fair, that signaled the end of the West’s four decade hostility to the PPP, starting in 1953. Dr. Jagan had written to the US President in December 1989 seeking US support for free and fair elections in Guyana.
Earlier in 1989 Dr. Jagan wrote to President Gorbachev, President of the USSR, also seeking his support. Dr. Jagan had reminded President Gorbachev of the latter’s earlier support of President Bush’s demand for free and fair elections in Nicaragua, which was a friend of the USSR. Continue reading →
