Guyana SPEAKS will be hosting a special event to celebrate the work of the Guyanese-born architect and cultural activist, Oscar Winston Abrams (10/3/37-15/2/96) on Sunday, 13th March 2022 at the following time:

Abrams was a theatre designer and community organiser and activist who is best known for establishing and directing the Keskidee Centre in London.  As Britain’s first Black arts centre it combined theatre programmes with grassroots activism and cultural education.  Our distinguished speakers include: Oscar Abrams’ daughter, journalist Amah-Rose Abrams, as well as:

GUYANA: Surging oil prices: Guyana could get US $120M from next oil lift in April

… but costly imports may mean more expensive gas prices

Guyana’s second oil lift for 2022 – another one million barrels – could earn the country some US $120 million (or GY $25 billion) because of the steep increase in oil prices, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat said.

The second oil lift for 2022 is scheduled for April; the country’s first lift this year was in January Guyana secured US$95 million (or GY$19.8 billion) from the sale of that one million barrels of oil. There are about five or six oil lifts per year.

With the first oil lift, oil prices for the Brent crude (the benchmark Guyana uses) were around US $95 per barrel. On Tuesday March 8, however, oil prices rose to around US $130 per barrel.          Continue reading

U.S., Venezuela discuss easing of sanctions, make little progress – sources

CARACAS/WASHINGTON,  (Reuters) – U.S. and Venezuelan officials discussed the possibility of easing oil sanctions on Venezuela but made scant progress toward a deal in their first high-level bilateral talks in years, five sources familiar with the matter said, as Washington seeks to separate Russia from one of its key allies.

Both sides used Saturday’s meeting in Caracas to present what one of the sources described as “maximalist” demands, reflecting longtime tensions between the Western Hemisphere’s main power and one of its biggest ideological foes.

A U.S. delegation led by Juan Gonzalez – the top White House Latin America adviser – and Ambassador James Story held talks at the Miraflores palace with socialist President Nicolas Maduro and his Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, the sources said.          Continue reading
