GUYANA: Israeli Group explores dairy farming to supply milk to DDL

Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and the LR Group of Israel are currently undertaking a feasibility study for the establishment of a commercially viable dairy farming operation designed to supply DDL’s TOPCO milk plant with fresh cows’ milk for pasteurization and packaging, DDL said on Friday.

The study forms part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the two companies last June, and according to DDL, provides for collaboration in the development of a dairy farming operation that will include the participation of local dairy farmers.    Continue reading →

Guyana and Suriname – Corentyne Bridge : model design agreed upon

Guyana and its sister country Suriname have settled on the model for which the highly-anticipated Corentyne Bridge will adopt.

During a joint press conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) on Thursday, Guyana’s President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali said he and Suriname’s Head of State, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi have settled on the approach for interested companies to design, build, finance, own and operate the Corentyne Bridge.

Earlier in July, eight companies were shortlisted to build the bridge linking Guyana to Suriname.
The proposals are to be submitted on September 16, 2021, following which a joint evaluation committee will assess the bids. Subsequent to the choosing of the successful bidder, the company will have one year to conduct a feasibility study on the bridge.          Continue reading →

Long Purple Eggplants

Eggplant (US,[1] Australia,[2] New Zealand, anglophone Canada), aubergine (UK,[3] Ireland, Quebec, and most of mainland Western Europe) or brinjal (South Asia, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa)[4][5] is a plant species in the nightshade family Solanaceae. Solanum melongena is grown worldwide for its edible fruit.

Most commonly purple, the spongy, absorbent fruit is used in several cuisines. Typically used as a vegetable in cooking, it is a berry by botanical definition. As a member of the genus Solanum, it is related to the tomato, chili pepper, and potato, although those are of the New World where the eggplant, like nightshade, is Old World. Like the tomato, its skin and seeds can be eaten, but, like the potato, it is usually eaten cooked. Eggplant is nutritionally low in macronutrient and micronutrient content, but the capability of the fruit to absorb oils and flavors into its flesh through cooking expands its use in the culinary arts.          Continue reading →
