A Message to the Diaspora: Hold Guyanese Politicians Accountable!

It came late during the discussions. One questioner wanted to know what the diaspora could do to help in the current crisis in Guyana. The discussions were held on a cold and wintry afternoon on Liberty Avenue, in Richmond Hill. This is an enclave in Queens in New York that is frequented by politicians, particularly from Guyana.

Queens has the single biggest concentration of Guyanese outside of Guyana. The unofficial number is around 200,000 persons. The current situation in Guyana has brought the diaspora into focus, and the role it could play in moving the debate forward.     Continue reading

Greenidge and US Deputy Secretary of State discuss Guyana’s “upcoming” elections

Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge and United States Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan on Wednesday discussed Guyana’s “upcoming national elections” and security matters related to the political instability in neighbouring Venezuela, a State Department spokesman said.

The Guyana Government has not definitively stated whether elections would be held this year, but both the governing A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change and the opposition People’s Progressive Party have identified their presidential candidates –  incumbent David Granger and Irfaan Ali.         Continue reading

More aircraft, boats for GDF; no place for low endurance soldiers- Granger

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President David Granger on Thursday announced that the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) would be getting more aircraft, including drones, this year.

Addressing the opening of the GDF’s 2019 Officers’ Conference, he said some of the GYD$14 billion allocated to the GDF this year would be used to purchase “light transport aircraft” as well as drones for border surveillance, inshore patrol vessels and engineering and transport equipment.         Continue reading
