Sixty years ago, Berry Gordy set up the hit factory of Motown. Arwa Haider looks at how an independent record label created one of the most influential sounds of the 20th Century.

On 12 January 1959, the music sensation that changed America – and the world beyond it – was set in motion. Detroit-born 29-year-old Berry Gordy founded Tamla Records with an $800 loan from his family’s collective savings.   By the following year, he’d merge this into the Motown Record Corporation: an independent empire that would seal its genuinely iconic status, introducing legends including The Jackson 5; Diana Ross and The Supremes; Stevie Wonder; Smokey Robinson; Marvin Gaye; Martha and The Vandellas; The Commodores and many others among its hundreds of signings.

Guyana: Nearly a dozen Customs officers fired for Corruption

Guyana Revenue Authority – Corruption Investigations.

Almost a dozen Customs officers were sacked this past week for alleged corruption.

According to reports, a few, who were sent home, would have served in excess of 20 years at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).

While Commissioner-General Godfrey Statia could not immediately be reached, yesterday, well-placed sources confirmed that the termination was long in the making.

There were investigations being conducted since last year with reports recommending termination of the staffers who were mainly working at various city wharves.     Continue reading →

It was August 2015 at Idlewild Park in New York. There were a number of greats of West Indies cricket. At the end of the game the young cricketers wanted to speak to only one of them. He willingly obliged and for the next few minutes he had them under his spell. Alvin Kallicharran spoke about the need for discipline, about keeping oneself fi t and above all to never to give up, even when a mountain is staring at you.

The youngsters listened intently and at the end of his motivational speech they gave him a warm applause. Alvin’s simplicity and his ability to mix with all have endeared him to people from all walks of life. He sees it as his mission to share his knowledge with others and to pass on information that can be of help.    Continue reading →
