City Council unveils five-year Stabroek redevelopment proposal
THE STABROEK MARKET REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT – was launched today, 18 August 2020. The Mayor and Councillors of Georgetown gave the green light for the project.
The execution of this project will result in the beautification of the Stabroek Market area and will boost local tourism in the surrounding environs, being that the market is a National Landmark and an integral part of Guyana’s history.
The project will also result in the development of all vending and shopping spaces in the market and a better transit system leading to and from the market. Thereby making the shopping experience of visitors less hectic and more safe and as a result improving business activity at the market.
Mayor Ubraj Narine stated that with government support, the project, which is envisaged as a public-private partnership, will take about five years to complete.

I am not sure how this can be considered in isolation from the rest of the city. It will need to be walled in community. The Stabroek Redevelopment needs to be a small part of the redevelopment of the entire Guyana.
That is all BS talk and a lot easier said than done. It will never get legs. Just a distraction for the real issues that Guyana is facing now with Covid.
It’s hard to imagine that this project will turn into reality within the next 5-10 years. It’s seems to inspired by examples from Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi….. Having visions for the futures is however not a bad idea!
P.S. Does the Mayor have any idea, who will be footing the bill?
Taxpayers !

Looks to me like a 100-million-USD project….. Guyana’s tax revenue for 2019 has been about 1 billion USD (226 billion GYD). Hence, the project would cost 10% of the annual tax revenue.
