CRICKET: ‘Slow bowling prince’ Sonny Ramadhin turns 92 – oldest living West Indian

“The prince of slow bowlers” – Sir Len Hutton

To appreciate this royal description of Sonny Ramadhin by Sir Len Hutton, one must understand the background of Len Hutton.

Sir Len (1916-1990) was one of the greatest ever batsmen in international cricket. Between 1937 to 1955, he played 79 Tests, amassed 6,971 runs with 19 hundreds at an average of 56.7 per innings.

He scored over 40,000 First-Class runs and hit 129 centuries. Hutton first encountered the wily spinner from Trinidad on the West Indies tour of England in the summer of 1950.    Continue reading

Three months ago, during a time of pressing uncertainty, retired West Indies Cricketer Ramnaresh ‘Ronnie’ Sarwan opened his ultramodern restaurant, RS 53 ‘RestoBar & Lounge’ — just a stones-throw away from the Providence Stadium where he had thrilled fans for many years.

U.S.A: The truly aggrieved are the descendants of slaves not of slave owners– By Mohamed Hamaludin

In this time of coronavirus/COVID-19, “herd immunity” has become a familiar phase but there are two versions. One says that nobody should be vaccinated, allowing everybody to be infected and the virus simply disappears. The scientific version is that everybody – or at least a sufficient number of people –should be vaccinated, making the population immune.

It is an absorbing intellectual exercise trying to determine which version applies to European Americans – the so-called white people – that has caused them to become immune to the reality of their original sin and the continuing agony of the descendants of the four million enslaved African Americans – the so-called black people.      Continue reading
