Florida, USA, battered parts of the Caribbean, leaving a trail of destruction that will cost hundreds of billions of dollars of rebuilding, monies that many of the small states don’t have. Many Guyanese live in the affected areas.

At least 13 persons are dead in the Leeward Islands zone alone, it was reported. Along its way, the US and British Virgin Islands have taken damage. So did Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda and Puerto Rico.

In Florida, all commercial flights from Miami Airport for yesterday and today were cancelled ahead of Irma’s landfall. Overhead images showed traffic backups after authorities ordered mandatory evacuations.     Continue reading →

News Americas, LONDON, England, Fri. Aug. 28, 2015: According to the North American trade publication, Travel Weekly, US tourism to Cuba is now growing at such pace that the country is experiencing a shortage of both highly trained Cuban professional guides and non-Cuban certified tour directors to accompany the tours that US Treasury regulations require almost all US visitors to take.

It is just one indication of a situation that as this year goes on may change, if as seems likely the US Administration allows its citizens to travel to Cuba on an individual basis.  Continue reading →

A Guyana-born pilot arrested in November with over US$600,000 in cash hidden in his jet is facing major troubles with his properties and bank accounts.

Not only is Khamraj Lall charged in Puerto Rico, a US territory, with smuggling bulk cash, but the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has gone after 14 bank accounts, his Lexus car, and two planes, including a jet that he uses in a private service that he operates in Guyana. Continue reading →

Guyana ranks 90th in ICT report

Guyana ranks 90th in ICT report

(Jamaica Gleaner) Jamaica dipped one spot to rank 74th overall in The Global Information Technology Report (GITP) 2012 published this month, but tied with 57 other countries to take the number one spot in the telecoms competition subcategory.

The overall level of competition in all the categories is assessed based on monopoly, partial competition, and full competition.

Sweden led the world for the third consecutive year whilst Jamaica’s ranking sank for the sixth consecutive year, according to the GITP 2012 Living in a Hyper-connected World, published by the World Economic Forum (WEO), based in Switzerland. The WEO is an independent non-aligned organisation that seeks to shape global and industry agendas.

Jamaica’s performance actually improved, but its rank dipped due to the addition of four nations to the 142-nation report.  Continue reading →
