I arrived in Guyana about a month after the celebrations on May 26, 2016, marking 50 years of independence from direct colonial rule. People seemed to be still basking in the afterglow of the big party.
Traces of the event were still very evident. Everything looked bright and clean and freshly painted. Moreover, just like the lights and Christmas decorations left hanging outside some houses long after the season ends, Guyana flags and buntings and multicolored lengths of fabric were still ‘vestigially’ fluttering and flapping everywhere.
It was as if people realized that removing all the drapery and streamers and logos would force them to return to a normal much less colorful everyday reality–with all of its associated challenges. Continue reading

Chinese group traveling worldwide in RV reaches Guyana

A group of passionate young people from China and Taiwan who dared to achieve and complete their dream of travelling 200 countries driving a Recreational Vehicle (RV) reached Georgetown yesterday. They were previously in Venezuela.
What started out as a group of 12 in two RV’s has now shrunk to four as the group pursues their global travel. Their names are Wujingyi, Chun-Hung Chen, Shuotiao and Hambin Chen.
The lifetime journey all started on May 19, 2012 in China. Since then, the group has traveled through four continents, crossed three oceans and visited 45 countries and more than 170 cities in an RV. Continue reading

Walter Spence may be the first Guyanese to ever win an Olympic medal. He competed for Canada in the 1928 Olympics and won a bronze medal in the 4×200 m freestyle relay event.
Walter Percy Spence (March 3, 1901 – October 16, 1958) was a swimmer from British Guiana (who competed for Canada in the 1928 Summer Olympics and 1932 Summer Olympics. He immigrated to the United States and held several national swimming titles there.
Spence was born in Christianburg, British Guiana, the oldest of eight children—four brothers and four sisters. His father was Scottish and worked as a big game hunter and guide, while his mother was Indian. Continue reading →
