Latin American Public Opinion (LAPOP) Poll:
At least 87 percent of Guyanese do not believe that votes in general and regional elections are “never” counted correctly and fairly, according to the latest Latin American Public Opinion (LAPOP) poll conducted this year.
Titled “Pulse of Democracy”, the report states that “there is wide variation across countries in terms of beliefs about election integrity”. While 75 percent of Uruguayans believe that votes are always counted are always counted correctly, only 18 percent in Colombia, Guyana and Jamaica agree. The figures show that 17 percent believe that votes are always counted correctly and 65 percent say sometimes this is done. Continue reading

The day came and went without any big surprises. The results of the Venezuelan regional and local elections were as expected. Chavismo won at least 19 out of 23 gubernatorial races – with one result still too close to call – and in a majority of municipalities as well, far from surprising for an election organized by an authoritarian regime. Another expected figure was the turnout rate, which represented less than half of the electoral census, the second-lowest turnout since governor and mayor elections are held in Venezuela, confirming the steady decline in participation since the parliamentary elections of 2015. This makes sense in a country where almost 20% of its citizens migrated and most of the people who live there feel increasingly disenchanted with all political parties or are disenfranchised in one way or another. I’ve heard people say “My schooldays were the best days of my life.” Not so for me. I so loved growing up in my neighbourhood with family and friends that when my parents said “It’s time for school.” I wasn’t ready for it.
However they went ahead and enrolled me in St Rose’s Junior School, rightly believing that I would get a good grounding in the three ‘R’s Reading , wRiting and aRithmetic. It was a long time ago and I have a spotty memory of my introduction to schooling!
I remember bawling loudly and to no effect when being loaded on to Mr. Horsham’s carriage. Yes – carriage! It was a hansom carriage, I suspect from Bastiani’s stable on Anira St in Queenstown. The driver was Mr. Horsham, a tall dignified black gentleman in a top hat and carrying a long whip. My fellow passengers were Dr. Jardim’s daughters and Marguerite Glasford who were a lot more dignified than I was. Continue reading
The NRF was enacted in 2019 under the previous APNU+AFC administration. At the time, the government had explained that the legal framework for the fund includes provisions for public oversight management, the nature and source of deposits, withdrawals, including Parliamentary approval, and determination of amounts to be withdrawn. However, the PPP/C which was then in opposition, had contended that the framework is complex and places too much authority in the office of the finance minister. After assuming office in 2020, the PPP/C led government began moving towards overhauling the legal framework for the fund and has said it hopes to table the draft legislation before the end of the year. WASHINGTON/GENEVA, (Reuters) – The discovery of a new coronavirus variant named Omicron triggered global alarm yesterday as countries rushed to suspend travel from southern Africa and stock markets on both sides of the Atlantic suffered their biggest falls in more than a year.
