Nov 08, 2021 –Kaieteur News Former Finance Minister Winston Jordan, has expressed grave concerns over Guyana’s borrowing spree and he also questioned the legality of a letter sent to the Chinese ambassador regarding a loan request of US$1.5B, which he said was signed by a finance ministry official instead of the subject minister who according to Section 58(1) of the Fiscal Management and Accountability Act 2003 (FMAA), has the sole authority to borrow on behalf of the Government of Guyana.

In a letter to the editor of this newspaper, Jordan said that he had begun to hear rumours, around March, about the government’s approach to China for loans totalling US$1.5 billion, to finance various infrastructure projects.        Continue reading

Guyana on brink of becoming one of world’s largest oil holders; careful management is key – says EITI

OILNOW – 08 November 2021

Recent Atlantic offshore oil discoveries have promised to generate an economic boom for Guyana and its’ citizens, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) said, pointing out that mainly left unexplored until 2015, the nation is now on the brink of becoming one of the world’s largest oil reserve holders and the 2nd largest in South America.

Since its first world-class discovery in 2015, ExxonMobil has made over 22 discoveries at the prolific Stabroek Block, hitting just three non-commercial wells.

“Exploration results have revealed an unprecedented success rate of over 80% with estimated gross recoverable resources at over 13.6 billion barrels of oil and gas,” EITI said, pegging the discovered resources above the latest estimate put out by Exxon of 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent. This places the South American country in the top 20 list of nations for oil reserves.          Continue reading

But not all dispensaries are legit: a black market still caters to a large share of cannabis consumers unsatisfied with the high prices and potency limitations imposed on government-approved pot products.            Continue reading

BlogTO – 08 November 2021

The U.S. land border finally reopened to Canadians this morning as of 12:01 a.m., ending the last of the extended closures that restricted “non-essential” travel between the two countries since March 21, 2020.

Restrictions have been easing since the summer, starting with partial border openings for fully vaccinated travellers into Canada and ramping up with additional restrictions lifted in August and September.

The August easing of non-essential travel by the Canadian government has allowed Americans to enter the country by car or rail for the last two months, though the U.S. government is only now following suit       Continue reading
