United States-based Guyanese could soon be asked to pay more to send their relatives and friends a ‘small piece’ or a ‘frek’ if a Bill is passed to impose a two percent tax on all remittances sent to Guyana and several other countries to help fund the construction of a US-Mexico border wall.

Introduced to the House of Representatives on March 30, 2017, the Border Wall Funding Act seeks to amend the Electronic Fund Transfer Act to impose a fee for remittance transfers to certain foreign countries, and for other purposes. The US-Mexico wall, a major campaign promise by American President Donald Trump to keep out illegal aliens and other undesirables from entering the US,  is estimated to cost US$21.6 billion.     Continue reading

David H. Petraeus

General David Petraeus, a retired four-star general, was the Commanding General of the Multi-National Force-Iraq. He served in this capacity from February 2007 to September 2008. He was also the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from September 2011 to November 2012.

General Petraeus is a scholar as well. He earned his PhD from Princeton University in International Relations and has held a number of academic appointments in leading universities. In mid-April 2017 General Petraeus sat with Josette Sheeran, a former Director of the World Economic Forum. The meeting was at the President’s Forum at the Asia Society in New York and it focused on General Petraeus’ views on America’s military affairs.
