A very wise woman, who also happened to be my mother, once told me: “If you know something good or hear something good about somebody, you should pass it on.” Today I’m doing as instructed by telling you about a few gems I stumbled on recently.

I’m not that big a basketball fan (the American construction would be “…not that big of a basketball fan.” Strange.) but there’s an American television series called “Open Court” that is probably the most entertaining sports programme on the tube. It’s all talk, minimal footage of plays, with 8 or so of the best who ever played in the NBA, speaking spontaneously and candidly and at length – not just sound bites.  Continue reading

There are growing concerns within the Indian Guyanese community that the Government has embarked on large-scale discrimination against them. This is being fuelled by politically driven accusations by the PPP using the same emotive language used by the PNC/PNCR in the 1990s – ‘ethnic cleansing.’ I do not accept that there is such discrimination but the growing perception is a negative phenomenon so early in the life of the Government. It should not be dismissed because once such perceptions take hold, they are very difficult to overcome.   Continue reading

Pooran Ramnanan Delivers as Promised!

Pooran Ramnanan promised and he delivered. The recent games with the cricket legends were an unqualifi ed success attracting hundreds to Idlewild Park in Queens, New York

Pooran’s vision was to bring the legends to New York to play in two T20 games. It was also to invite players to have a game with the youngsters and to pass on valuable tips to them. The public too would get a chance to meet and greet the players and engage them in conversations. It was no easy task to assemble some of the top West Indies legends in cricket but Pooran managed to do so with panache and skill.  Continue reading
