West Indies cricket legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul recently received the Honorary Doctor of Laws by The University of the West Indies (UW)), St. Augustine, Trinidad.

Chanderpaul, 44, is one of the most outstanding batsmen in West Indies history. He is currently one of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Ambassador for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament to be played in the Caribbean from Nov. 9-24.       Continue reading →

Kevin Pietersen’s book is a good place to start. His views are less about cricket and more about the politics of pettiness in English cricket.

After criticizing the state of English cricket Pietersen says, ‘you need stars if you want to grow your game.’ There is word that another star Shivnarine Chanderpaul is writing a book about his treatment by the cricket administration in the West Indies. When this book is published will we read about the politics of West Indies manipulative tactics?

Here is one for the purists: In November 2013 Dave Cameron, President of the West Indies Cricket Board, paid tribute to Shivnarine Chanderpaul for becoming the first West Indian to play in 150 Tests.  Continue reading →

Pooran’s vision was to bring the legends to New York to play in two T20 games. It was also to invite players to have a game with the youngsters and to pass on valuable tips to them. Twenty years ago this week, West Indies batsman Brian Lara broke Sir Garfield Sobers’s 36-year-old world record for the highest score in a Test innings.

The legendary left-hander surpassed his compatriot’s 365 not out as he scored 375 against England at Antigua’s Recreation Ground in a historic match played from 16-21 April 1994.

BBC Sport spoke to those who witnessed his world record innings close up: two of Lara’s West Indies team-mates – Phil Simmons and Shivnarine Chanderpaul – and five England players who suffered in the field: Angus Fraser, Jack Russell, Phil Tufnell, Graham Thorpe and Alec Stewart.

The West Indies team were the most accommodating of guests in the two Test series in India to mark the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, by allowing their hosts to dominate them as never before, losing twice by an innings and within three days. Apart from their gracious guard of honour to welcome the great man to the wicket, in what turned out to be his last Test innings, their pathetic display was the rudest possible farewell gift they could have given to a fellow professional and legend of the game; it was, moreover, an embarrassment to all followers of West Indies cricket, even when held up against the many embarrassments of the past 15 years or so.

In the first Test at Kolkata, only two West Indians appeared to be playing Test cricket, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Shane Shillingford; at Mumbai, they were belatedly joined by Denesh Ramdin. But, it has to be said, even Chanderpaul could not quite live up to his own lofty standards.          Continue reading →

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is this weekend playing in his 150th Test match, the only West Indian to do so. That he should be celebrating this landmark in Sachin Tendulkar’s historic 200th Test and swansong in front of his devotees in Mumbai is typical of the career of this most undemonstrative of batsmen and this most unassuming of cricketers. For, even as he has achieved greatness at the wicket, Chanderpaul has always seemed to be overshadowed by the more dashing exploits and more colourful personalities of other cricketers.

Ever since, as a skinny 19-year old whose kit was too big for him, he diffidently walked to the crease against England, in March 1994, on debut at Bourda, the ground that nurtured his precocious talent, he has, somehow or the other, never quite been able to measure up, in the eyes of many, to the flair and flamboyance associated with the legends of West Indies batting. For much of his career, he batted in the shadow of Brian Lara, sometimes even forgotten as the reassuring presence (still in his first Test series!) at the other end as the Trinidadian maestro progressed to his world record 375.  Continue reading →

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has regained the number one ranking in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen after hitting two half-centuries in the Dominica Test which Australia won by 75 runs to claim the series 2-0.

The series victory put Michael Clarke’s side ahead of India in third position on the Reliance ICC Test Championship table.

Chanderpaul, who won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year at the LG ICC Awards in Dubai in 2008, scored 68 and 69 which earned him 19 ratings points and helped him to leapfrog South Africa’s duo of AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis into the No.1 position.  Continue reading →
