MOVIES: Sidney Poitier: The actor who broke down Hollywood’s racial barriers

Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier, who has died aged 94, once turned down the role of Othello because he did not want to be typecast as a black actor.

It underlined the dilemma faced by a man who broke down many of Hollywood’s racial barriers.

As the first black winner of the Academy Awards’ best actor statuette, he was always aware of being the standard-bearer for greater racial integration.

But often he felt he had become something of a racial token, and this denied him the opportunity of taking on more varied roles.

He died on Friday January 7, 2022, aged 94, the Bahamian foreign minister announced.

CRICKET: West Indies: A Most Interesting Start for the 2022 New Year! – By Tony McWatt and Reds Perreira

– By Tony McWatt and Reds Perreira

Cricket West Indies

It has been a most interesting first week start to the 2022 New Year for West Indies cricket. The first days of 2022 have produced some exciting appointments to the West Indies Selections Panel, ongoing fitness concerns surrounding at least one key player, as well as a few very enlightening comments from Head Coach Phil Simmons.

Most West Indies cricket fans would have been excited by Cricket West Indies’ successive announcements of the appointments of Sir Desmond Haynes and Ramnaresh Sarwan, as the Selection Chairman and Member replacements for the recently deposed Roger Harper and Miles Bascombe. The reputations of both Haynes and Sarwan, within both the Region and the wider cricketing world, as very well respected, knowledgeable, high caliber former West Indies players are undeniably solid.          Continue reading

Barbadians will head to the polls on January 19, a year before elections are constitutionally due.

New York Elections 2021 – Four New Judges – ” You Make Us Proud”

By: Dhanpaul Narine

The 2021 November elections were historic. They brought us a new crop of judges. These talented and remarkable women are trailblazers that have left an indelible imprint in their communities. Their scholarship, and service, span several countries, but what they have in common is the ability to dispense justice, without fear or favor, in one of the greatest cities of the world.

Judge Karen Gopee was born in Tunapuna, in Trinidad and Tobago. She rose to become the first Indo-Caribbean Judge in New York. Karen is from a working-class family. She worked hard with the support of her parents, Basmatee and Prakash Gopee. She attended Franklin K. Lane High School and graduated from Binghamton University and St. John’s University. Karen has deep roots in the community and was appointed a Judge by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2015. She will be a Judge in the Supreme Court in Queens County. One of her mentors is Judge Alex Calabrese who has always encouraged Karen to reach for the stars.            Continue reading

CARIBBEAN: Addressing the Geopolitical state of the Caribbean – by Francis Quamina Farrier

There are those Caribbean citizens who have travelled to all or most of the Caribbean and CARICOM countries. Their journeys include Suriname and Guyana on the continent of South America. Also, the many beautiful Caribbean islands, the Bahamas, and Belize in Central America. These individuals who have visited all or most of those countries, have a relatively good idea of the geopolitics of the region at first-hand, and the really, not-so-different cultures of those countries. Veteran Guyanese educator and geopolitical commentator, Dr. Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, explains it in his most recent scholarly long paper.            Continue reading

BARBADOS — Royal note to Barbados: no apology, no reparations but we love your culture – By Mohamed Hamaludin

OPINION — By MOHAMED HAMALUDIN

Nearly 400 years after the British occupied the island that came to be known as Barbados, the Caribbean nation finally severed official ties with the former “Mother Country” when it replaced Queen Elizabeth II with its governor-general Sandra Mason as the titular head of state. It was surprising that it happened 55 years after independence.

The British presence dated back to 1620 when a Captain Simon Gordon, ignoring the Arawak who lived there for centuries, determined there were no inhabitants. Five years later, on May 14, 1625, a Captain John Powell arrived and, as Barbadian journalist Suleiman Bulbulia noted in a Guardian column on the eve of the severing of the colonial links, claimed it for King James I. “Los Barbados” (the bearded ones), so named by earlier Portuguese visitors for the beard-like appearance of its fig trees, became simply Barbados.            Continue reading
