Guyana Goldfields workers call off strike at Aurora mine

Guyana Goldfields Inc. announced Friday that the work stoppage at its Aurora mine that began on July 2 has ended, paving the way for union and the Ministry of Labour representatives to meet with aggrieved workers.

“Employees are starting to return to work in a phased approach to ensure orderliness and full production is anticipated to resume shortly,” the company said in a brief statement.

Guyana Goldfields said as a result of the three operational days lost, the company estimates that approximately 22,500 tonnes were not processed. However, full year production guidance remains unaffected at 145,000 to 160,000 ounces of gold.              Continue reading

Guyana Elections: PNCR continuing to insist on house-to-house registration

The main partner in the governing APNU+AFC coalition, the PNCR today maintained that house-to-house registration is crucial for credible elections and there will be no compromise on it.

This position was restated by the party today at a press conference. Critics have said that the insistence by APNU+AFC on house-to-house registration is  a ploy to further delay elections which should have been held by the end of March this year. Political analysts say the coalition’s relatively poor showing at the November, 2018 local government elections had made it wary of early elections.          Continue reading

Stabroek News – July 6, 2019: Convicted drug kingpin Shaheed Roger Khan is set to be released from a Florida prison on Monday after serving just over eight years of a 15-year prison sentence.

Khan, 47, is presently in what is described as “A low security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp.” July 8th 2019 is the date listed for his release.
