Guyana: Republic Arch recommissioned for 50th anniversary

As Guyana prepares to celebrate its 50th Republic anniversary on February 23 as a Republic, the Republic Arch in the capital city, Georgetown, was recommissioned.  The Republic Arch is on Church Street and Avenue of the Republic.

The Ministry of the Presidency’s Department of Social Cohesion recently rehabilitated the landmark.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Friday February 21, 2020, noted that the arch – a symbol of national pride – was situated amidst historic architecture including the Georgetown City Hall and the St. George’s Cathedral.      Continue reading →

Guyana Elections 2000: GECOM dubs joint services vote a smooth one

Members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Police Force (GPF), and Guyana Prison Service (GPS) constituted the lot.

GECOM had set up about 60 polling places across the country, with some 10,000 ballots extracted for the disciplined forces across the ten regions.

Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) officials, led by Chair Justice Claudette Singh, visited several polling places to make sure that the process was running smoothly. She told reporters, after observation, that the voting process was going unfettered and smooth.        Continue reading →

As I prepare to exercise the franchise in the fast approaching elections, I share with fellow Guyanese for which group my vote is to be cast and why. I do this publicly, before all, whether those of like electoral mind, those who stand on either side of the fence, or those on the fence.

My elections choice has nothing to do with oil; pays scant regard to the soapy promises embedded in glossy manifestos and violates racial voting taboos. It is not influenced by who has lambasted their political opponents more accurately, more piercingly, or more ingeniously. It is not based on who has recruited and let loose the greatest number of the loudest, most raucous public parrots pretending at intellectual analysis, political cunning, or the inhuman insights of spiritualists.        Continue reading →

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, February 20, 2020 (CMC) – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Leaders have ended their two-day Inter-Sessional Summit, here, agreeing on a number of initiatives, ranging from holding a conference on crime in Trinidad and Tobago, to pushing forward the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) that allows for the free movement of people and goods, across the 15-member regional grouping.      Continue reading →

Caribbean: Crying for you Venezuela and Haiti! – By Jean H Charles

Today Haiti and Venezuela represent two nations in shambles where
their citizens are leaving in drove seeking refuge in any hospitable
setting they can find.

Venezuela with a population of around 29 million people and Haiti with
a population of 11 million people are enduring a purgatory weaves by
national and international circumstances. Both nations are linked by
historical connection that placed Haiti has the midwife that facilitates
Venezuela birthing. Indeed when Bolivar visited the entire universe
seeking help to liberate his country from the Spanish conquistadors’
only Haiti on December 15 1815, stepped up to the plate with arms and
