Cricket: Australia wins second ODI – report and scorecard

Bailey and Starc set up Australia win

Australia 7 for 266 (Bailey 125*, Sammy 3-48) beat West Indies 212 (Powell 83, Starc 5-32, Maxwell 4-63) by 54 runs  …  Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

On Friday, West Indies batted first and were bowled out at the WACA for 70. Two days later, Australia were sent in at the same ground and were 6 for 98. Another short day’s play loomed. But George Bailey’s maiden international century changed all of that and drove Australia to a scarcely believable 7 for 266 – after the match he said he had considered anything more than 200 a bonus – and Mitchell Starc’s second consecutive five-wicket haul confirmed Australia’s 54-run victory.

The Perth fans who returned after seeing only 33.1 overs in the first match were certainly rewarded for their dedication. Not only did they see Bailey’s remarkable unbeaten 125, they were also treated to some dazzling fielding from West Indies and some powerful striking in their unsuccessful chase.   Continue reading

Follow-up to Essay: “Building a Nation” – by Major General Joseph Singh

Editor’s Note: Major General (Retd) Joseph Singh wrote a letter on February 1, that was widely distributed. One of the letter replies was by Emile Mervin quoted here  regarding  the “Joe Singh Creative Partnership Initiative” ; see last paragraph of the Emile Mervin’s letter.  Here is the link to MG Joe Singh’s first essay with comments: Essay (for Oscar)- Building a Nation – by Major General Joseph Singh

My contribution today is more in response to a letter published in the media of Monday, February 04, 2013, in which the writer stated that he anticipated hearing of a “Joe Singh Creative Partnership Initiative”, to tackle the dysfuntionalities referred to in my letter.  Continue reading

New Year Reflections and Wishes – By Eusi Kwayana

New Year Reflections and Wishes

By Eusi Kwayana

May the New Year bring new efforts to allow the Guyanese people to achieve what we deserve. When a religious personage of the Hindu faith, Swami Aksharanda, recently addressed the broad Hindu community in the context of a festival, he spoke prophetic words. He called on men to respect ALL WOMEN. If every religious faith called on its men to respect ALL WOMEN, there would be a chance of growing respect for all women. That would be the beginning of a great change.

I am personally grateful for all support in many non-political ways from ordinary Guyanese wherever I happen to be. In particular they organised to help sell my modest books. Their support was given whether they agreed with my views or not. To the extent I have the capacity to give back in return, I do freely volunteer my time and services where I am, though it is not home.  Continue reading
