Such was the scale of the global market crash last week in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the spectre of the 1929 Wall Street rout and the ensuing Great Depression of the 1930s has been raised. Comparisons no longer seem fanciful.

The failure of the US and the UK to swing into action with a wide range of mitigation measures – despite the lessons of Italy’s slow response to the spread of Covid-19 – has heightened concerns that a sustained, epochal downturn lies in wait.          Continue reading →

New York: State pulls liquor license of Guyana restaurant in Queens for flouting governor’s orders

[New York daily News] – New Oriental Guyana Restaurant on Liberty Ave. in Jamaica, Queens was shut down by the State Liquor Authority (SLA) on charges of violating Governor Andrew Cuomo’s order barring on-premises sales of food and drink.

Women and Examples from Ghana — by Francis Quamina Farrier

On Friday March 6, the West African country of Ghana, celebrated its sixty third Independence Anniversary with pomp and ceremony. Last Sunday, countries around the world observed “International Women’s Day” with a range of activities. As such, I have decided to merge these two annual events in this Feature Article.

In more recent years Ghana has been focusing more on higher education for the young women of the country. The education of girls and young women is now increasing in tertiary education as never before. Last year (2019) the country observed “The Year of Return”, when Africans in the Diaspora, whether born in Africa or of African heritage, were encouraged to visit Ghana to mark the 400 anniversary of the commencement of the Atlantic Slave Trade of which Ghana was a participant both as victim and enabler.       Continue reading →
