Guyana: Climate Change impacts could cost oil rich Guyana US$800M – Gov’t Report

— Govt. Report says over 300,000 citizens could be harmed

By Kiana Wilburg – Nov 25, 2021 – Kaieteur News – Since the 1960s, increases in temperature, sea level and extreme rainfall have exposed just how vulnerable Guyana is to climate change. This frightening global phenomenon has resulted in more than US$600M in losses. That figure could however see an alarming spike as two government reports predict that more climate woes of potentially catastrophic proportions lie ahead for the world’s latest oil exploration hotspot.

According to the 2015 Climate Resilience Strategy and Action Plan for Guyana, climate change will no doubt alter the characteristics of hazards Guyana is exposed to (e.g. average annual rainfall) and the nature of variability (e.g. more intense storms, irregular seasonal rainfall), which will hamper the nation’s socio-economic development objectives.              Continue reading

Guyana goes back to Dutch to solve drainage woes

NOVEMBER 24, 2015 | BY | Government has announced a “holistic” approach to the country’s drainage and irrigation systems. Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson (centre, left) during the meeting with the Dutch Risk Reduction (DRR) Team and local engineers. Present also is Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder.The David Granger administration, is talking with the Government of The Netherlands, which has signaled intentions to play a key role through the provision of consultancy services.

According to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure yesterday, Minister David Patterson met with a three-member team from the Government of the Netherlands’ Dutch Risk Reduction Team (DRR-Team).

Float parade may have to be postponed, due to heavy rainfall

Report: February 21, 2011 – Update

It is reported that the Mashramani Parade for 2011 may have to be pushed back due to heavy rains that have been falling in Guyana since last week, and the expected rainfall for the rest of this week.

The event is scheduled to be held this Wednesday, February 23, 2011.

There have been reports of flooding in some parts of Georgetown as well as other parts of the country.  Read reports below:-
