 Former Principal of the Cyril Potter Teachers’ College of Education, William McDonald, who died on February 5, was laid to rest in New Jersey on Saturday February 8.  The brilliant and well-respected Guyanese educator had spent a lifetime of selfless service to Guyana in the field of education.

 William McDonald was qualified in Mathematics, French, Geography and Latin from the University of London, England. He later did two post graduate degree courses in Education, at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, and the University of Hull in England. Continue reading

Some individuals are born to change the way we see ourselves and the world we live in. Walter Rodney was such a person. A Guyanese historian, political activist, and author of How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972), he brought a new consciousness of self-emancipation across the Caribbean Region.

The following quotes are taken from The Groundings with my Brothersby Walter Rodney, first published in 1969. It covers the year he spent in Jamaica working among the masses and the Rastafari community. In Guyana, where the working poor still face oppression and struggle for survival, Rodney’s teachings remain relevant.

7th edition of Guyana Where and What launched- now in Portuguese as well

Saturday, 15 February 2014 – CND -The Ministry of Tourism on Thursday launched the seventh edition of Guyana Where and What, a pocket book/ guide that was published and edited by Gem Madhoo-Nascimento, and which contains detailed information about local businesses, tourist attractions, and some bit of the country’s history.

This edition is printed in English and translated into Portuguese, contains photographs showcasing various activities in Guyana. This is to allow the book to serve as a tour guide not only for English speaking tourists, but also Portuguese and to complement the growing number of tourists and immigrants from Brazil.   Continue reading
