Jagdeo slams GAWU President’s position on sugar talks with govt

General Secretary of the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagdeo on Saturday publicly rejected positive statements by the President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Komal Chand about talks with President David Granger.

While Jagdeo insisted that the PPP “has no rift” with GAWU, he appeared to send a strong signal that he would not mind the now aged Chand and other union elders removed. “We will support the union there. You have a lot of good, strong, young, bright leaders of GAWU who will have a great future in building that union and keeping it relevant,” he said.     Continue reading

Three of the world’s largest oil and gas companies are preparing to bid for offshore blocks near to where United States oil giant ExxonMobil found large amounts of sweet light crude oil off the Caribbean Community nation’s coast two years ago officials said Friday.

Resources Minister Raphael Trotman said a high level team from California-based Chevron Corp is expected in the country next week to discuss an application for an offshore bloc while British Petroleum and Brazil’s Petrobras have also signaled plans to apply for blocs.      Continue reading

YEARS AGO, when I was a member of the Knesset, I decided to stage a demonstration in the plenum hall.  I put on a T-shirt with the slogan “Peace is greater than Greater Israel”. In the middle of the debate I took my jacket off, displaying the slogan.

After a few minutes, an usher approached me and said politely: “The Speaker would like to see you in his office.”

The speaker was Yitzhak Shamir, a former commander of the Lehi terrorist underground. He received me with a broad smile, asked me to be seated and said: “Uri, you have made your point. Now I ask you to take the t-shirt off and return to your seat!” Of course I did so.     Continue reading
