Veteran politician, Ralph Ramkarran thinks that Charles Ramson may have interrupted and obstructed a plan that was already schemed within the People’s Progressive Party for one or a few individuals to unilaterally decide on the party’s presidential candidate.
Ramkarran, a former long-standing member of the PPP, made his view known in his most recent column.
There, he acknowledged that Ramson recently announced publicly that he would seek the PPP’s nomination to be its presidential candidate for the 2020 general elections. But, Jagdeo chided Ramson and said that he deviated from party principles. Continue reading →

Jagdeo slams GAWU President’s position on sugar talks with govt

Komal Chand – GAWU
General Secretary of the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagdeo on Saturday publicly rejected positive statements by the President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Komal Chand about talks with President David Granger.
While Jagdeo insisted that the PPP “has no rift” with GAWU, he appeared to send a strong signal that he would not mind the now aged Chand and other union elders removed. “We will support the union there. You have a lot of good, strong, young, bright leaders of GAWU who will have a great future in building that union and keeping it relevant,” he said. Continue reading →

If Guyana cannot confront people like Ryhaan Shah and Ravi Dev, it will explode
Mar 07, 2017 Features / Columnists, Freddie Kissoon
Guyana is seeing dangerous waters coming right onto its doorsteps but if it doesn’t act, it will face horrible consequences. A group named the Guyana Indian Indentureship Abolition Association (GIIAA), founded by some of the worst rabid minds existing in this world and funded by some businessmen who accumulated vast wealth from Bharrat Jagdeo’s oligarchic rule, put on a presentation at the National Cultural Centre to commemorate the hundred years of the abolition of indentureship last Friday.
Some of the presenters were the usual suspects – people who ideologically believe in ethnic superiority in Guyana and people who see the fall of the PPP in May 2015 as a defeat for the permanent rule of the PPP and the collapse of a labyrinthine, ethnic web of money, politics and power that characterized Guyana under the domination of Jagdeo from 1999 to 2015. I put the date to 2015 because a mediocre, jejune leader like Donald Ramotar was a mere front for Jagdeo when Ramotar held the presidency. Continue reading →

Can the PPP be saved?

Ralph Ramkarran
By Ralph Ramkarran (reproduced from http://www.conversationtree.gy )
The end of the Jagan leadership of the PPP terminated the era of real, as opposed to formal, internal democracy. Its structure and leadership model, third world and Leninist influenced, lent itself to authoritarian methods. But the Jagans ensured full discussions and neither dictated conclusions. Both changed their views from time to time after being persuaded by contrary opinion in discussions.
The symbol of that openness was that after a debate where opinion was divided, a vote was taken. However, after the Jagdeo leadership gained traction, voting after discussions ceased at his instance. Jagdeo summed up all discussions and the summing up, containing his views, was the decision. He still does so. Elections at and after Congress began to be grossly manipulated. Both Donald Ramotar and Bharrat Jagdeo publicly opposed the 2011 presidential candidate being elected by secret ballot. Continue reading →

Donald Ramotar
Donald Ramotar once asked me what is “the poetic essence of history”.
May 16, 2015 | By KNews | Filed Under Features / Columnists, Freddie Kissoon
In a letter in the Kaieteur News, published several years ago, long before he became President, Donald Ramotar, inquired about something I wrote in one of my columns, “the poetic essence of history.” I didn’t reply. I felt if I had defined the term, it would not have made an ounce of difference to Ramotar.
I didn’t offer a definition because (at the time) I felt Ramotar had become disrespectful of the poetic essence of history when in a conversation at Bakewell’s, he bluntly told me that the giant of a woman, Andaiye, a founding member of the Working People’s Alliance, was racist against Indian people. The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) is also claiming statistical victory in Monday’s general elections, less than one hour after its main opponent claimed that it was enjoying a commanding lead.
