I have just reviewed the City of Vancouver instructions for what to do during, and after, an earthquake – I noticed that they advised against using the “Triangle of Life” method, that is a method in which you find, say, an automobile and instead of going into the vehicle, you stay close to the side of it, so if something drops on the vehicle, you are likely to be saved from being crushed – that pertains to any solid object during the earthquake. Do NOT stand in a doorway. What they did not mention is that you should adopt the fetal position. That is the position you adopt in your mother’s tummy before birth. But, lie on your side in a fetal position.
I saw and heard this advise in an Oprah Winfrey show. A survivor of a fire at a night club told the viewers that he survived because as a high school wrestler, they were instructed to adopt the fetal position when they find themselves in trouble. So, as he was rushing for the door at the night club, he tripped and fell and the others following him, just piled on top of him, so he immediately rolled on his side and adopted the fetal position – that allowed him to breathe, while everyone above him suffocated and died under the weight of the crowd.
