United States Ambassador, D. Brent Hardt has chided the Government of Guyana over what he calls the “censorship of the media”. The ambassador at a reception on Friday evening to celebrate World Press Freedom Day criticized how Government has failed to properly address several pressing media problems.

“Two years later it’s certainly disappointing that radio in Guyana still falls short of offering an open public square for debate and discussion” Hardt told invitees.According to Ambassador Hardt, back in 2012 he had expressed his surprise at knowing that Guyana alone had complete state monopoly of the radio. He said that in other countries with their ubiquitous “call in shows” was a vital public forum, but in Guyana there is no such counterpart.  Continue reading

US Ambassador in Guyana Brent Hardt says it is vital that local government elections be held this year as signs of yet another postponement emerge.

The envoy made the remark on Wednesday at an event in observance of World Environment Day at the Umana Yana where he said that the garbage situation was part of the larger problem of local governance.

“That is why it is also so vital to move ahead with local government elections this year. Because only when people have the ability to elect or reject local officials will they have … that power and that authority to ensure that those who are in charge at the local level support a clean and healthy environment,” Hardt said.   Continue reading

United States Ambassador to Guyana, Brent Hardt on Tuesday 28 May, said even if Guyana had amended its financial crimes law, the South American country still risked being blacklisted for doing nothing to prosecute money launderers.

“I think even if legislation had been passed, it would have been still an uphill battle for Guyana because, as we (US) noted in our narcotics report of last year, from the passage of legislation in 2009 to the present time, there have not been any money laundering investigations,” he told Demerara Waves Online News after the opening of a three-day workshop for journalists.   Continue reading
