La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent

SOURCE: CMC – The La Soufriere volcano in SVG could erupt “anytime from now”, lead scientist Professor Richard Robertson said Thursday, following a significant increase in activity. It has now started to erupt and evacuations have been ordered.
“The interpretation is that the volcano has entered a period of heightened activity and it is suggesting that fresh magma is either near the surface or approaching the surface and therefore the possibility for activity to move to an explosive phase has increased significantly,” he said. “Given the current state of activity, given the data that we have, we still can’t say exactly when that would happen.”
“It’s possible that things could pick up more, that you could have more clear seismic signals prior to an explosion, but given what we’ve seen, it’s possible it could happen in the next few hours or few days,” Professor Robertson added.
EVACUATION ORDERED
An evacuation order has been issued for residents near the La Soufriere volcano.
He said Professor Robertson had informed him that matters had deteriorated further at La Soufriere
Countries in the region have offered accommodation for persons who have been displaced..

Statement of His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana regarding the Looming Crisis in St Vincent and the Grenadines

Having regards to the emerging situation in St Vincent and the Grenadines, this afternoon I called Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves and assured him of Guyana’s full support in dealing with this looming crisis.
The Prime Minister and I discussed immediate support, which will be required in the response. The Prime Minister indicated that apart from the need to evacuate citizens, there were other emergency material needs.
I committed to him that Guyana, upon receiving the full list of their needs, would immediately put together a national response to supply the items and arrange for them to be shipped to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
At this time, we would like to assure the citizens of St. Vincent and the Grenadines of Guyana’s unwavering support and solidarity.
Our planet the Earth is a fragile yet hostile place, the home of life as we know it. The planet’s history is marked by innumerable natural, cataclysmic events ranging from earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, fires, droughts, and bombardments from asteroids and comets, etc., over the eons.
The La Soufriere Volcano comes on the heels of the Gelingardalsgos spectacular eruption in Iceland. The Eastern edge of the Ring of Fire, a massive geographical area, in geological terms, is very close to the St Vincent eruption. We hope it doesn’t cause major disruption and damage to life and limbs on the Island.
It is good to hear that Guyana is prepared to lend a helping hand to one of its neighbours. We hope other nations are ready to do the same should the situation turn more serious.
