COVID-19: UN report warns of corruption risks in vaccine procurement

The report first noted that even under normal circumstances, the public procurement process poses the biggest risk for corruption among all government functions. “Corruption scandals in procurement are widespread, but in the health-care sector, the procurement of pharmaceuticals and medical devices are particularly prone to corruption,” the report heeded, as it outlined multiple instances in which corruption can occur in the pre-bidding, bidding and post-bidding phases.    Continue reading

First batch of Russian COVID-19 vaccines arrives in Guyana

 Apr 04, 2021- Kaieteur News – Guyana has received its first batch of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccines, further boosting the government’s immunisation campaign. A quota of 25,000 doses arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Friday and more are expected to come in the following weeks since the government is paying US$4 million for a total of 200,000 doses. ($20US per dose)

A press statement from the Ministry of Health noted that the vaccines were procured from the United Arab Emirates; however, it is of Russian origin, where it is being manufactured.        Continue reading
