Amerindian Month 2012 – “COUVADE” by Michael Gilkes

Poet/playwright MICHAEL GILKES’ epic dream play “COUVADE” is unique Caribbean theatre, set in the cultural and landscape complexities of Guyana. It is a story of search and discovery and the price paid. Awards – best script, directing, designing and acting. Included in the star studded cash are members of the Amerindian communities of the Lokono, Makushi, Wapisiana and Carib – also Guyanese actors Ron Robinson, Andre Subryan, Richard Naraine, Marc Matthews, Ken Corsbie, Collette Jones and Caribbean super actor Errol Sitahal.
Director – Michael Gilkes. Designer – Ken Corsbie. Videographer – Marc Gilkes.

“COUVADE” is Michael Gilkes’ epic play about identity, race, native peoples, rebirth. It was the first item on the first ever CARIFESTA (Caribbean Festival of the Arts) 1972 in Guyana. Gilkes staged an updated and grander production in 1992 at the Guyana National Culture Centre. Ken designed the soaring set made entirely of “round wood” found in the country’s rainforest. The production won several awards that year. The promotional video shows images from both historic productions.
