GUYANA: Demolition of Afro-Guyanese houses in Mocha, Linden points to racial discrimination- WPA

The headquarters of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA).

Just days after President Irfaan Ali fended off opposition accusations of racism against Afro-Guyanese such as the demolition of houses in Mocha, East Bank Demerara, the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) insisted that the grant of titles to stronghold supporters raises concerns about apparent racial discrimination.

“ These actions are in stark contrast to the issuing of titles to “squatters” in communities deemed to be supportive of the government. The government cannot not know that the perception and reality of unequal treatment undermine its own stated mantra of One Guyana,” the WPA said. “The events in Mocha Arcadia, therefore, opens the government to charges of racial profiling and racial discrimination in the process of governance,” that party added.            Continue reading

Guyana Politics: Granger-led coalition “likely” to win next “close” election -US Congress report

The United States Congressional Research Service (CRS), a think-tank for the United States (U.S.) Congress, says some analysts believe that the David Granger-led coalition is likely to win next year’s general elections.

“Past general elections in Guyana suggest the 2020 race will be close, but some analysts contend the APNU/AFC’s multiparty and cross-ethnic coalition is likely to sustain the Granger government in power,” the CRS said in its December 6, 2019 edition

Granger’s People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) is the largest party in A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) umbrella which includes the often vocal Working People’s Alliance (WPA). The Alliance For Change (AFC) is the second largest party in the entire coalition.      Continue reading

Walter Rodney Inquiry – concerns raised by GHRA and PNC

Rodney Commission is “worst form of electioneering,” can whip up racial tension- GHRA

Thursday, 06 March 2014 13:52

The Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) on Thursday dissociated itself from the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry (COI) , saying it was possibly designed to whip up East Indian bitterness against the Peoples National Congress (PNC) and appeared to be the “worst form” of electioneering by the incumbent administration.

That rights organisation took issue with one of the Terms of Reference that requires the three-member commission to investigate the extent to which the many quasi-political military organizations existing in Guyana at the time of Rodney’s death, were tasked with surveillance against the ‘political opposition’, rather than against his Working Peoples Alliance (WPA)Continue reading
