Nations rise, dominate, then fall – By Freddie Kissoon
Nations rise, dominate, then fall – By Freddie Kissoon
I did two columns before on the similarities between the rise of Trump and Hitler. Please see the following; Saturday, April, 8, 2017, “Hitler and now Trump shows how nonexistent is the human mind,” and Sunday, September 13, 2015, “A new book on Hitler that reminds one vividly of Donald Trump.” With the bizarre emanations of President Trump on the violence created by white supremacists last week, it is time again to look back at Trump and that uncanny similarity with the rise of Adolf Hitler.
There is nothing this columnist can add to a huge ocean of literature on the reason why great nations fall. “The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers” by Paul Kennedy, is perhaps required reading in an advanced course in International Relations in most universities. Kennedy’s book may be breathtaking, but he is not alone in predicting why great countries rise up to dominate the world then become ordinary lands. Continue reading
The End-of-World Scenario. The Real Danger of Nuclear War – commentary
What Would a US-European-Russian War Look Like? The End-of-World Scenario. The Real Danger of Nuclear War
Since the April 6 missile strike, the Trump administration has issued new threats against Syria and new ultimatums to Russia to end its support for the regime of Bashar al-Assad. On Wednesday, President Trump defended the unprovoked strike and called Assad a “butcher.”
The G7 powers over the weekend lined up behind the US strike and its pretext—the totally unproven claim that the Syrian government carried out a chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town. They endorsed Washington’s renewed drive to topple Assad, Moscow’s only Arab ally in the Middle East. Continue reading

United Nations Pageant seeks inner beauty to promote tourism, goodwill and cultural style.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Guyanese Online News |
Wednesday, July 16, 2014 | Tangerine Clarke |
United Nations Pageant seeks inner beauty to promote tourism, goodwill and cultural style.
Pageants typically focus on external beauty, glitz and glamour. However, the United Nations Pageant hosted in Kingston, Jamaica seeks goodwill ambassadors.
The United Nations Pageant is an international event, dedicated to identifying and showcasing the best tourism and ambassadors of humanity. Contestants are scored on inner beauty or how they relate with others, and show support towards community service. Contestants from Africa, South America, India, the United States and the Caribbean converged from July 1st through the 6th, 2014. This was an opportunity for comradery, community service and cultural expression.
Leon Williams, the United Nations Pageant president, explained “Unknown to the contestants, we had judges socialize and mingle with them during the early days of the pageant. The judges were revealed later on day three of the pageant and participated in activities with the contestants throughout the week. This provided opportunity to know each contestant personably. During this part of the process, a person can excel at the finals –but not get along with others; and this will hinder their chance to win. This opportunity offers more than a pageant title. The winners become ambassadors who foster goodwill and help those less fortunate. Retrospectively, we also look at contributions each contestant has offered in their home community. Humanitarianism is a strong indicator of good character.”

Embassies, civil society reiterate calls for early Local Govt. Elections
Embassies, civil society reiterate calls for early Local Govt. Elections
MARCH 6, 2014 | BY KNEWS |
The pressure is piling up for Guyana to hold local government elections early with a joint statement from civil society and three embassies yesterday [March 5, 2014], signaling a growing unhappiness over the current situation.
Everything seems to be in place for votes to be cast as early as August 1st, the strong statement said.It has not been the first time that such has been issued, with the last a year ago.
This time, the British High Commission, Embassy of the United States of America and the High Commission of Canada made it clear that with new laws in place and the elections machinery ready, August 1st seems a very possible time. Continue reading

Christmas gifts from the politicians – Commentary – Stabroek News
There is little peace and good will in the political arena this season. And that applies not just to Guyana, but also to some of the leading democracies such as the UK, France and, of course, the US, to name a few. There is President Donald Trump whose administration stumbled into farce a long time ago, and which has since been disintegrating into chaos. As has become customary in more recent times, lawmakers agreed a short-term spending compromise to carry the government over into the new year.
However, Mr Trump has refused to sign the bill unless the Senate attaches funding to it for a border wall fence. So far he has adhered to that position, effectively partly shutting down the government, and sending thousands of its workers home without their end-of-year salaries. Apparently he does not remember that the Republicans paid a heavy price for refusing to sign a compromise when President Clinton was in office. Continue reading →
