Mighty Sparrow to receive prestigious Order of Trinidad and Tobago award

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Thursday February 20, 2014, CMC –
The Trinidad and Tobago government on Wednesday February 19  said it had recommended that the Grenadian-born, Dr. Slinger Francisco, the “Mighty Sparrow” be given the country’s highest award.

In addition, the Kamla Persad Bissessar administration said it would also meet the expenses related to the medical condition of the veteran calypsonian.

Sparrow, acknowledged as the “Calypso King of the World” returned to Trinidad and Tobago earlier this month after recovering from a diabetic coma in the United States, where he has been residing for years.   Continue reading →

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — After several rumours of his death surfaced in the Trinidad and Tobago media a few months ago, the ‘Calypso King of the World’ has moved from a coma to the stage. One can safely say, “The Birdie flies again!”

Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, has been performing on stage at the Kaiso House Calypso Tent for the 2014 carnival season. His debut appearance on Thursday, February 13, 2014, moved the audience at the Queens Park Savannah venue to tears.

Accompanied by his wife Margaret, Sparrow was first warmly greeted by executive members of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO), including calypsonian Twiggy, Marvelous Marva and Duane O’Connor. O’Connor had the honour of assisting Sparrow into his jacket moments before his performance.  Continue reading →

The Mighty Sparrow, Slinger Francisco, has been released from hospital and he is now recovering in a special therapy facility.

This according to a press release sent out yesterday on behalf of Margaret Francisco, wife of the internationally renowned calypsonian. Sparrow was hospitalised last month in the US where he remains after falling into a coma.

The release said Sparrow continues to improve daily and will now undergo physical strengthening and other medical procedures to improve his overall well-being.    Continue reading →

This according to a press release sent out yesterday on behalf of Margaret Francisco, wife of the internationally renowned calypsonian. Sparrow was hospitalised last month in the US where he remains after falling into a coma.

The release said Sparrow continues to improve daily and will now undergo physical strengthening and other medical procedures to improve his overall well-being.

“We wish to place on record our profound appreciation for the continued outpouring of best wishes, prayers and support from the public for the complete recovery of the Mighty Sparrow. We also wish to express our sincere thanks to the hospital doctors and staff for the professional performance of their duties and the loving care and attention they exhibited. We will continue to issue updates as significant items relating to his progress comes to hand,” the press release said.
