US-Guyana anti-narcotics air, marine patrols not cover for US operations against Venezuela- President Ali

President Irfaan Ali on Friday said the Shiprider Agreement  would not be used by the United States (US) to conduct covert operations against Venezuela through Guyana’s territory under the guise of anti-narcotics operations.

Speaking with the media shortly after exchanging notes for the activation of the 19-year old Shiprider Agreement from next Monday, the President referred to the protocols that have been agreed to for the US’ entry into Guyana’s maritime and airspace.    Continue reading

Guyana, US to activate Shiprider agreement for air; maritime anti-drugs fight

Guyana and the United States (US) would be activating a 19-year old Shiprider Agreement that would allow the two countries to interdict drug traffickers, the US State Department said ahead of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit.

“Following the Secretary’s visit, a bilateral Shiprider Agreement will come into force, enabling joint maritime and airspace patrols to interdict narcotics,” according to a fact sheet issued by Mr. Pompeo’s office.      Continue reading
