When the former A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU/AFC) government decided to close four non- performing sugar estates in 2016 and 2017, the then administration decided to place the assets of Wales, East Demerara, Rose Hall and Skeldon sugar estates under the control of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).

Severed GuySuCo workers received their severance pay and was given an additional $250,000 payout by the PPP/C government. Some observers say that the $250,000 may have been a “conscionable” payoff by the government given the difficulty it faces to reopen the estates and rehire the workers as promised.            Continue reading →

In keeping with one of its major manifesto promises, the PPP/C government is moving ahead with plans to reopen the East Demerara, Rose Hall and Skeldon estates.  As part of this process, there have been visits to the various estates by the new Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha and officials of the government holding company, the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited.

The hasty closure of these estates in addition to the one at Wales and the callous retrenching of 7,000 workers will remain one of the major blunders of the APNU+AFC administration. It was not as if  APNU+AFC should not have taken steps to rationalise the sugar industry. There were clearly good grounds to make a critical examination of the industry and embark on consolidation and transformation considering the vast losses that were being registered and the bailouts this required.  Continue reading →

Guyana’s Sugar: A MISMANAGED GUYSUCO

For the last two decades, the sugar industry was kept alive with huge subsidies. Upon taking office in May 2015, the Granger administration realized that GuySuCo was ailing. A temporary solution was to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and continue to subsidize it with billions of dollars. The reason was that there was no easy solution to salvage the bankrupt GuySuCo.

The Jagdeo administration decided to build the Skeldon sugar factory at a cost of more than US$200 million because as Jagdeo said, the factory would lower the cost of production and make Guyana’s sugar competitive on the world market.      Continue reading →

GECOM ready for 523,831 persons to vote in Local Govt Elections

The Guyana Elections Commission Friday said all systems are go for 523,831 eligible registered voters to cast their ballots in Local Government Elections slated for March 18, 2016.  The total number of valid votes cast at the May 11, 2015 general elections are 412,012 or 72 percent of the 570,708 then eligible voters for the entire country.

For the first time ballots would be cast for Councils in new towns-  Bartica, Lethem and Mabaruma. They join the list of the other towns- Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam, Anna Regina, Rose Hall and Corriverton.   Continue reading →

The date set by President David Granger is April 23, 2016.

He made the announcement on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at a public meeting held at the Bartica Secondary School. “I made a promise when I was campaigning and I promised that Bartica will become a town before the 26 May, 2016, the 50th Independence anniversary, in fact Bartica will be a town on the 23rd  April 2016.”  Continue reading →

The opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has promised to push for Bartica to be designated a town and for a number of ills like poor waste disposal to be addressed.

Already, the area is often described as a gold mining township where business has been booming largely due to a spike in the price for the precious yellow metal.

APNU Chairman, David Granger told residents of Bartica and several areas at a town hall meeting at the St. John’s Anglican School that his coalition would like to see that community become Guyana’s seventh town.
Authorities have also identified the need for Lethem near the Guyana-Brazil border to be designated a town. The other towns are Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, Corriverton and Anna Regina.
