The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuco), Professor Clive Thomas and the entity’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Paul Bhim on Friday differed about the viability of marketing sugar in the Caribbean due to increasing competition from sister producers.

Delivering a presentation at the inaugural National Cane Farmers Conference, Thomas said one option open to the loss-making entity is to sell more sugar to sister Caribbean Community (Caricom) countries by taking advantage of market protection through the 40 percent Common External Tariff (CET).   Continue reading →

Ruling politicians dominate every aspect of life in a nation. A politician can send a country to war and that could mark the end of that state as a viable territory. A politician can decide which industry must close and the economic consequences can be disastrous. Countless citizens of this country across political and racial lines have moaned the loss of the railway. It was a decision of the Prime Minister, Forbes Burnham.

There is no biography of Burnham so we are yet to read a detailed explanation as to why Burnham made that decision. I join with others in expressing utter disgust at Minister Ramsaran’s abuse of Sherlina Nageer. But I have to say that I am not the least surprised. For the last 23 years we– all of us–have allowed the PPP to criminalize others while they, the PPP, have used the cover of the government and state to abuse and intimidate others without sanction.

Some of us have been crying out as loud as we could, without success, for some acknowledgement that political abuse, violence and otherizationhave now become systemic in Guyana. Sometimes we are shut down by the press. WPA’s Professor Clive Thomas has long pointed to the criminalization of the State under the PPP.   Continue reading →
