  • Former President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday declared that he had nothing to do with convicted drug lord, Shaheed ‘Roger’ Khan or a phantom gang and said if he is found guilty of crimes here, he should be jailed again.
  • “We are not afraid of Roger Khan’s release because we had nothing to do with Roger Khan and if he did crime in Guyana he must face the consequences too. We’re not afraid of that,” Jagdeo said.

Khan, who is expected to be released on July 8, 2019 from a US jail for trafficking cocaine to that country, had stated in several newspaper statements before he had been captured in neighbouring Suriname that he had prevented the Jagdeo administration from being toppled by a coup.            Continue reading

Guyana: Ex-Home Affairs Minister Ronald Gajraj dies

Former Home Affairs Minister under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration, Ronald Gajraj, died at the Woodlands Hospital today after he was rushed there for medical attention.

He passed away shortly after noon. He was 65.

Gajraj served as Minister of Home Affairs from January 1999 to May 2005 under the Bharrat Jagdeo administration. He was forced to resign under local and foreign diplomatic pressure, particularly from the Americans due to allegations linking him to the activities of a terror gang known then as the ‘phantom squad’.    Continue reading

Presidential candidate for the opposition coalition, David Granger Saturday night sought to link the gunning down of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing to the ruling People’s Progressive Party.

Addressing thousands of persons at the Linden Bus Park, Granger said “the rulers of the darkness of the world killed Courtney.” He observed that 10 years ago there was the phantom squad when Bharrat Jagdeo was president.”   Continue reading

Dear Friend:

Following my resignation from the PPP, ending 50 years of association with that organization, I responded to proposals by Messrs. Raphael Trotman and Khemraj Ramjattan, to join the platform of the Alliance for Change.  I did so, not as an AFC member, but an independent citizen, in exercise of my constitutional and democratic right to choose with whom to associate.

I had wanted to leave the PPP since 1998, when the process to destroy the party’s internal democracy had started. I didn’t do so then.  I again wanted to resign in 2004-2006 when the leadership refused to investigate many of my complaints including allegations of corruption, fraud at the Wildlife Department, illegal export of bottle-nose dolphins, phantom squad.   Continue reading
