Campaigning in Trinidad for the Aug. 10 general elections is heating up with analysts warning that voting almost strictly along racial lines could well determine, which party runs the oil and gas-rich twin-island republic with Tobago for the next five years.

Top executives from both of the major parties — the governing People’s National Movement (PNM) and the main opposition United National Congress (UNC) have publicly traded serious political, race-sensitive barbs in recent days with UNC leader and former prime minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar being accused of openly appealing to Indo Trinidadians when she referred to Prime Minister, Keith Rowley as a “blank man” on the campaign trail.     Continue reading

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley made the announcement when Parliament was prorogued last Friday to make way from the 12th Trinidad and Tobago Republican Parliament. Nomination day is July 17, for the 2020 General Election.

There are 41 elected members of the House of Representatives, who are elected in single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post system.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad [UPDATE] — “We have won,” declared Keith Rowley, the political leader of the opposition People’s National Movement (PNM), as preliminary results in Monday’s local government elections in Trinidad showed the PNM emerging with 8 of the 14 corporations up for grabs.

As predicted by the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) poll, the PNM retained the three corporations it held in the 2010 election and picked up five more, giving it control of eight corporations so far.    Continue reading
