ESSEQUIBO: Always BANKS Country – by Francis Quamina Farrier

The Bolivian Republic of Venezuela has once again been flexing its military muscle in the face of its smaller peace-loving neighbour, The Cooperative Republic of Guyana. But from all indications, the many international friends of the only English-Speaking country in South America, are solidly backing-up Guyana – BANKS Country –  and encouraging it to yield, “NOT A BLADE OF GRASS”, or “one carass”; lyrics in the popular Dave Martins patriotic song which also states, “Not a drop of water, from the Pomeroon”, (river) where Dave Martins was born. One of the reasons is that Essequibo, like the rest of “The Land of Many Waters”, including the bottled water, Tropical Mist, remains, “BANKS COUNTRY”.       Continue reading

Sometimes a pleasant surprise lands on your doorstep regarding someone else’s doings that connects strongly with you as it triggers memories in your own life or your own search. Recently, out of the blue, I received a CD done by a young Guyanese performer, Juke Ross, who has recorded a cover version of my song “Not A Blade Of Grass”. Produced here in Guyana, I was intrigued by the recording on two levels: first, because, although it was a different approach from the one I used with Tradewinds Juke had managed to capture the essential heart of the song as a straightforward paean to Guyanese feelings about country.

Without ever feeling me out about my intentions or how the song originated, he had clearly captured the same ingredient that was in the original recording. Although we have since communicated by email, I haven’t spoken to Jude and while I don’t know much about him, including his age, my sense is that he is a fairly young man starting out on a musical career, and I was impressed at the sensitivity level he was showing.   Continue reading

There are all sorts of strange tales about my song Not A Blade O’ Grass.
Some I’ve heard second-hand, but some folks, believe it or not, have
actually come to me directly to categorically assert that they know
exactly how the song came about.  A couple times, I’ve been told, “Burnham
pay yuh to write dat song.”  One fellow, fully blocked, told me that Mr.
Burnham had even suggested some of the words.  In fact, while Brother
Forbes certainly used the song for his own ends, he had nothing whatsoever
to do with its creation.  For that, you have to go to the late Pat Cameron.
