NICIL CEO, Winston Brassington

For years, the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) has been touted to be a parallel treasury in the country. It was used by the former administration to invest millions of taxpayers’ dollars into highly risky development projects.

NICIL reportedly also spent tens of millions of dollars to build roads, drainage and culverts, and to lay pipelines and in some cases, underground power cables. Just weeks before the 197-room, US$58M Marriott Hotel is set to open its doors in Kingston, Georgetown, Government in explosive disclosures yesterday admitted that all of the monies it spent so far to bring the facility into operation, has been from the taxpayers.

That was after court cases and other factors held back the release of more than US$30M from a bank and two private investors from Hong Kong.

There had been questions about Government finding the estimated US$34M that was needed to complete the hotel but Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, finally broke the silence, disclosing how the hotel came to the point of completion.   Continue reading

…Brassington statements akin to a pleading criminal about to be jailed – Ramjattan

Recent statements by Executive Director of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) Winston Brassington on the state of affairs of the finances for the Government Holdings Company are akin to those of a criminal about to be incarcerated.

This is according to Alliance for Change (AFC) Chairman, Khemraj Ramjattan, who says that the NICIL’s Executive Director’s statement now claiming that NICIL’s coffers only contain $700M as against the billions touted is very “circumspect.”    Continue reading
