GUYANA: US$260M contract signed for new Demerara River Bridge

Kaieteur News – Following some five months of negotiations with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and its partners, the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Public Works on Wednesday signed the contract for the construction of a new US$260 million Demerara River Bridge (DRB).

A 3D model of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge which was released earlier this year.

The project which was awarded to CRCC and its partners China Railway Caribbean Company Limited and China Railway Engineering Bureau Group Company Limited will see the construction of a modern four-lane structure linking Region Three and Four.               Continue reading →

GUYANA: Vice Media’s Interview with Vice President Jagdeo – Stabroek News Editorial

To see our Vice President fumbling for words the other evening in his interview with VICE Media was not pretty.

His typical press conference begins with a two-hour monologue touching on every issue, many of which are outside his chief cook and bottle washer portfolio. Local media operators tolerate these because most of them are genuinely intimidated by Mr Jagdeo who has described them as vultures, barred one senior reporter from his press conferences and pulled state advertisements from this newspaper.

So one might not feel too sorry for him when he  was led to believe for over an hour that the award winning journalist, Isobel Yeung, was genuinely interested in his opinions on oil, the environment and his grand vision for Guyana with a mandatory sprinkling of attacks on opposition individuals she had likely never heard of.          Continue reading →

Work to begin on new Demerara Harbour Bridge next year

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MOPI) will be moving ahead with the New Demerara Harbour Bridge this year with the intention to begin actual work on the much need crossing in 2019.

In a recent interview with the Department of Public Information, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, assured that work on the crossing between Houston and Versailles which is pivotal for linking Regions Three and Four and further afield will begin next year.          Continue reading →
