Origin

The Swahili language, is basically of Bantu (African) origin. It has borrowed words from other languages such as Arabic probably as a result of the Swahili people using the Quran written in Arabic for spiritual guidance as Muslims.

 As regards the formation of the Swahili culture and language, some scholars attribute these phenomena to the intercourse of African and Asiatic people on the coast of East Africa. The word “Swahili” was used by early Arab visitors to the coast and it means “the coast”. Ultimately it came to be applied to the people and the language.

Anti Money Laundering Bill…Guyana tops list of 55 defaulting countries

FEBRUARY 2, 2014 | BY  |  Guyana shares the worst rating in the world with Mozambique, as it relates to the list of countries under the Financial Action Taskforce (FATF) to be reviewed come February 10, when the body meets for its review group in Paris, France.

According to official FATF records seen by this publication, Guyana heads the list of the International Co-operation Review Group (ICRG).
That group includes countries such as Guyana, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Haiti, Cameroon, Aruba, Benin, Fiji and Zambia.   Continue reading

Burnham to be honoured with Oliver Tambo Award

Late Guyanese President Forbes Burnham is to be honoured by the South African government with the Oliver Tambo Award.

The award, established in 2002, is conferred on foreign nationals (Heads of State and Government) and other foreign dignitaries for friendship shown to South Africa. During the 1970s and 1980s, under Burnham’s leadership Guyana played a leading role among third world countries in opposing apartheid in South Africa and helping liberation movements in southern Africa.

The following press release was today issued on behalf of his family:

“Ms. Roxane Van West Charles will be traveling to Johannesburg, South Africa to accept the Oliver Tambo Award (Gold), which was conferred on her father, the late President L F S Burnham by President Zuma. She will be accompanied by her sister, Dr. Francesca Onu, and her husband, Dr. Richard Van West Charles. The award ceremony will take place on the 27th April.  Continue reading
