GUYANA: Gov’t to host massive outreach to Buxton/Friendship on Monday July 4, 2022

Buxtonians and residents of other neighboring villages will have the opportunity to meet with several government ministers on Monday, July 4, to discuss developmental issues and other concerns, when government takes a major outreach to the East Coast Demerara community.

The exercise will be led by Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, and fulfills a commitment made by His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, when he visited the village last Tuesday.      Continue reading

GUYANA: Guyanese in Suriname updated on massive economic opportunities

Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha and Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Robert Persaud met Saturday with Guyanese living in Dutch-speaking Republic of Suriname.

With some 25,000 Guyanese living in the neighboring South American nation since the 1970’s who work in the agriculture, fishing, construction and even the oil and gas sectors, Foreign Secretary Persaud said the intention of the outreach was to update the diaspora of the countless opportunities that exist in Guyana.        Continue reading

GUYANA: US$35M mega agro-processing facility to be constructed at Enmore

The Government of Guyana through the Guyana Office for Investment has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with Caribbean International Distributors Inc., a member of the Rudisa Group of Companies for the development of a landmark US$35 million agro-processing facility.

The facility is expected to engage in the production and packaging of various products ranging from: milk, natural fruit juices and water to a variety of bread products such as hamburgers rolls, biscuits, cookies, croissants, bagels and donuts to supply Guyana’s local and export markets.

GUYANA: SUGAR: The Skeldon factory and its reopening by the PPP Government

In keeping with one of its major manifesto promises, the PPP/C government is moving ahead with plans to reopen the East Demerara, Rose Hall and Skeldon estates.  As part of this process, there have been visits to the various estates by the new Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha and officials of the government holding company, the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited.

The hasty closure of these estates in addition to the one at Wales and the callous retrenching of 7,000 workers will remain one of the major blunders of the APNU+AFC administration. It was not as if  APNU+AFC should not have taken steps to rationalise the sugar industry. There were clearly good grounds to make a critical examination of the industry and embark on consolidation and transformation considering the vast losses that were being registered and the bailouts this required.  Continue reading
