Calypso meets parang

The Calypso king of the world, Mighty Sparrow last Monday finally met the queen of parang, Alicia Jaggasar when they both performed at the Mas Camp Pub, Woodbrook in a specially crafted event titled, “Calypso Meets Parang: A One Night Stand.” The two treasured artistes spent time chatting backstage each expressing admiration for each other’s musical talents.
The night proved to be a wonderful affair as the artistes helped the patrons get into the spirit of the Christmas season early, while also taking them down memory lane through some classic calypsos and traditional Christmas songs. Continue reading

It was 1955 when a then struggling Guyanese promoter met a young Trinidadian by the name of Slinger Francisco and on a whim decided to include him in his group that was about to tour the interior.
That whim proved to be very profitable for the Guyanese as we all know that Slinger, better known as the Mighty Sparrow eventually became one of the best known names in the calypso world….. Sparrow, today in picture(r)
That Guyanese was Cyril Shaw who later became Sparrow’s manager andwent on many tours with him around the world.
Today Shaw, who is 87, finds if difficult to remember those days as his memory is failing him but his wife Bhanmattie Shaw, who went on some of the tours, recently told The Scene “those days were fantastic days.” Continue reading

The man who will always be known as the the Mighty Sparrow, received a standing ovation when he came on to the stage at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), in Port of Spain on Saturday evening, September 21, 2012.
But the event which featured a dramatision of some of Sparrow’s calypsoes by various artistes had some unscheduled drama which saw him take a fall to the side of the stage and he had to be assisted to his feet, but he was not ill and he was unharmed and was able to continue his performance. This Nostalgia seeks to record the enterprises on Robb Street in the old days, and pays tribute to the Mom and Pop’s businesses, when Georgetown was a thriving, flourishing business community. Now don’t get me wrong, business is still flourishing, but yesteryear there was no VAT, no street vendors blocking up the pavements, no styrofoam plastic containers choking the drains and no minibuses crowding the thoroughfares.
It would be easy to take you on a wandering trip along Robb Street from Water Street to New Garden, but grouping the genres of businesses located there, would be more interesting and relevant.
For entertainment there was the Metropole Cinema which opened on Robb Street around 1935 with the Merry Widow and was destroyed by fire September 7, 2004. Continue reading →
