GUYANA: Decarbonisation with US$83.3M in renewable energy projects – IDB

As efforts continue with the implementation of the Guyana Utility Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL), the country is poised for a transformational leap towards decarbonisation, says the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The financial institution noted on Friday that the GUYSOL programme will invest US$83.3M in eight utility-scale, photovoltaic solar projects totaling 33MWp with associated 34MWh energy storage systems distributed across three areas in the country.

Specifically, it will invest in 10MWp in the Berbice area, 8MWp project in the Essequibo system with a minimum of 12MWh battery storage, and a 15MWp plant connected to the Linden system, with a minimum of 22MWh battery storage.        Continue reading →

Guyana’s Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, MP, on Sunday October 25, met with the high-level Barbados Housing and Investment Mission team at the Watooka Guest House Linden, Region 10.

Headed by Barbadian Minister of Transport, Works and Maintenance, Dr. William Duguid, the visiting delegation arrived in Guyana last Friday to seek investment opportunities and strengthen trade relations between the two CARICOM nations.

Guyana Politics: APNU+AFC countrywide protests point fingers at Caribbean Court ahead of key ruling

There are countrywide protests organised by A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) to press home its position that the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) does not have jurisdiction to hear an appeal in the “valid votes” case by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Ahead of Wednesday’s decision by the  Trinidad-headquartered regional court, APNU+AFC supporters on Monday staged several peaceful protests on the Buxton-Friendship-Vigilance public road, East Coast Demerara; Plaisance, East Coast Demerara ; Mandela Avenue, Georgetown; Agricola, Greater Georgetown and Linden in Region 10.

One holder of a degree in computer science, and another who is completing his degree in finance and accounting, two cousins, have teamed up along with the son of another to establish a major local plantain chip packaging business.

Local Government Elections – No room for complacency

If anyone is reading the signs correctly, the government has resigned itself to the fact that it did not do as well as it would have wanted in the Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) but it outdid the PPP in Georgetown and four other towns. Its intention appears to be not to dwell on the negative but the positive.

According to one of its ministers, the government is “quite satisfied” with the outcome. The administration opined that the elections and results confirm that its strategy has worked,”
This indeed is not the right time for the government to look back; it has to look forward and engage the people in the decision-making process. The LGE is over and it is no use crying over spilt milk.

GECOM ready for 523,831 persons to vote in Local Govt Elections

The Guyana Elections Commission Friday said all systems are go for 523,831 eligible registered voters to cast their ballots in Local Government Elections slated for March 18, 2016.  The total number of valid votes cast at the May 11, 2015 general elections are 412,012 or 72 percent of the 570,708 then eligible voters for the entire country.

For the first time ballots would be cast for Councils in new towns-  Bartica, Lethem and Mabaruma. They join the list of the other towns- Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam, Anna Regina, Rose Hall and Corriverton.   Continue reading →

The date set by President David Granger is April 23, 2016.

He made the announcement on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at a public meeting held at the Bartica Secondary School. “I made a promise when I was campaigning and I promised that Bartica will become a town before the 26 May, 2016, the 50th Independence anniversary, in fact Bartica will be a town on the 23rd  April 2016.”  Continue reading →

The opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has promised to push for Bartica to be designated a town and for a number of ills like poor waste disposal to be addressed.

Already, the area is often described as a gold mining township where business has been booming largely due to a spike in the price for the precious yellow metal.

APNU Chairman, David Granger told residents of Bartica and several areas at a town hall meeting at the St. John’s Anglican School that his coalition would like to see that community become Guyana’s seventh town.
Authorities have also identified the need for Lethem near the Guyana-Brazil border to be designated a town. The other towns are Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, Corriverton and Anna Regina.

The early Spanish explorers referred to this river as ‘Rio de Mirar’, the wonderful river, but it was the Dutch who christened the river, the Demerara, from the word ‘Demirar’, the wonderful.[1]
