Guyana closer to Category 1 status, as aviation sector improves

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Guyana over the past year has seen a dramatic growth in its aviation sector, especially in areas of safety and building institutions to oversee implementation and evaluation. The US$150 million project to expand the runway and modernization of the terminal at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) will be completed by late-2018.
For these reasons, the country is close to achieving Category 1 status, which means that Guyana-based carriers and others in the region can fly non-stop from Georgetown to any point in the United States, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said recently. Harmon hides behind GINA on BK Tiwari issue

Despite widespread criticism about the now revoked appointment of prominent Guyanese businessman, Brian “BK” Tiwari as a ministerial business adviser, Minister of State Joseph Harmon broke his promise to hold a news conference on Friday to deal with the issue.
Instead, Harmon spoke with the state-owned Government Information Agency (GINA) which issued a release and made no reference of the Chairman of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Larry London and Tiwari being on the visit to China with Harmon at the same time.

Guyana gives green light to Suriname’s Fly All Ways airline

The Guyana government is poised to grant permission to Fly Allways to operate scheduled flights to Guyana with connections to Brazil and the Caribbean, a top aviation regulator said.
“We have received an application from Fly Allways and we have processed that application and we have made a favourable recommendation to our subject minister to take to Cabinet,” the official of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) told Demerara Waves Online News.
Very strong indications are that Cabinet will give the Suriname-based airline the green light to begin flights to Guyana. Continue reading →

Female pilots hail Guyana’s first female flyer

The transformation of the country’s aviation sector as it relates to female involvement came in for high praise from Lucille Dawsey, the first female private pilot to fly in Guyana’s airspace.
The 72-year-old was honoured by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on Thursday at the Silhouette Restaurant in the city.
“I am very, very impressed to see other women more active in the local aviation sector. I have only been here for a short time and what I saw at Ogle and Timehri is very unbelievable in terms of human and physical developments,” Ms. Dawsey said, shortly after receiving a plaque from Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn.
