How could I not hate Brian Lara (see stats here)? He was exactly the kind of cocky, flashy show-off that Australians are trained from birth to despise: especially if the show-off is not Australian; and doubly so if the show-off happens to be very, very good. To see a man who is too big for his boots is anathema for many an Aussie fan. To see the same man demonstrate that, in fact, he fits into those boots perfectly is utterly unbearable.

My memories of Lara are mainly of frustration, of games that my beloved Australia would have won easily were it not for this contemptuous aristocrat standing in the way, plundering great and average bowlers alike. And he did it with such a born-to-rule attitude that you grew to hate the sight of him.       Continue reading

Clive Lloyd wants players to show passion for the sport

By Michael Bascombe – Caribbean News Now – PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad –Legendary former West Indies cricket captain Clive Lloyd wants current players to recommit themselves to the improvement of the game in the region.Considered the most successful test captain of all time, Lloyd said that the players must develop a passion for cricket, and not just the money.

“We must have our best players playing in our cricket – all aspects of our cricket,” he said in a recent interview with former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop.

“You can’t just think that you want all the money. Fellars are being paid pretty well but you must have some love for West Indies cricket. And at the moment I’m not seeing how it could move forward. I would like to see more of a skill set.”

Lloyd, who played in 110 tests and 87 one-day internationals for West Indies between 1974 and 1985, said that regional players are being overwhelmed by their opponents in all forms of the game.  Continue reading
